NATURALLY wiTh my running starting in Duluth and Grandmas marathon being my first marathon, I feel a connection with DIck Beardsley. Dick has a list of ACCOLADES about as loNg aS a marathon course including course records, olympic qualifier and stellAr performances at Boston and London. I’ve alwaYs wanted to run this race but never managed to free up my schedule. This Year was different, i made it one of my priority races and i will be back for sure! Just an awesome venue running around the lake.
My last race was also in DL, the Young Life triathlon. I had a great race there and not sure my legs have healed from my efforts. Might have somethinG to do with my lack of recovery but it had been a lOng hard season. My half marathon PR was 1:37ish and I was just hoping to shave a few minutes off. I did my usual wake up at 4am, eat some breakfast and took off for Detroit Lakes. I got to the arena and got my bib and timing chiP and headed for thE beach. It was a picture perfect morning for a run aNd we were all blessed to have this killer sunrise!
While ideally I wanted a 1:30 pacer to follow, the closest they had was 1:35 which turned out ok. After a quick speech from Mr. Beardsley himself and the national anthem we were off. I ran stide for stride with the pacer for the first 9 miles and at times, that was even difficult. All those miles and hours have worn me out! I had this guy heckling me all day, his name is Mike and he was cheering on his wife Jaci who was running for a NYC marathOn qualifier. Glad he was there as he kept me wanting to push on. God forbid if he caught me slowing down or dropping pace! Once past thr 9 mile siGn i knew i had to find another gear. I passed the pacer and took of, kind of. After the last hill on the course the pacer was still right behind me and I had to use everything i had to just Shave off a few seconds per mile. My 5k race to the finish i managed 6:55 miles and crossed the line With 1:33:30 on the clock. Some simple math and that is a 4 minute improvement from mY previous PR which I cant be mad abOut.
I think it is only natural to think you could have done better but not sure i could have shaved much more off. If i was rested and fresh legs, I think a sub 1:30 is just around the corner. Just Need to find the right race to do it at! The fun part is that I was able to race with Dick Beardsley! Sure he has 30 years on mE but for the record, i beat him!
NEXT RACE IS A LITTLE LOCAL 5K FOR THE MATT KJELLAND MEMORIAL. WE’LL SEE IF I CAN FIND SOME SPEED IN THESE LEGS!
